About Us
Sisters and Brothers:
Welcome to the UFCW Local
5 website. This site is designed to serve as a source of
information for Local 5 members, their families and
union and community allies in the fight to improve the
lives of working people.
Local 5 is the result of
a merger between seven UFCW local unions in Northern
California. The purpose for this coming together of
unions is to increase to strength of the membership in
the workplace, at the bargaining table and in the
community.
The combined memberships
of UFCW 120-Alameda and Contra-Costa Counties, UFCW
373R-Napa and Solana Counties, UFCW 428-Santa Clara-San
Benito Counties, UFCW 839-Monterey County, UFCW
870-Alameda County, UFCW 1096-California and
Arizona-Agricultural Workers and UFCW 1179-Contra-Costa
County constitute Local 5. This historic merger
consolidates
the largest number of locals together at one time in UFCW history and creates one of the largest private
sector unions in Northern California. Each union has had
a proud and unique history and will play a key role in
the development of the new union.
Local 5 represents
members primarily employed in retail grocery but also
has a significant presence in vegetable packing,
manufacturing, food processing, hair care, dental care
and finance. The new strength brought about by this
merger will lead to more organization in the areas in
which the union operates.
Please visit the website
often for union and industry updates relevant to the
members of Local 5.
